Lahore madrassa student raped: 'Accused has tried to take the matter to jirga'
Police have recently arrested a teacher wanted for allegedly raping a madrassa student in Lahore, Pakistan, but according to police, the former mufti of the madrassa is trying to settle the matter through a jirga before his arrest. Were
Police investigators believe this is why the
Mufti fled after the alleged rape videos with the student surfaced so that he
could have time and use various means to apologize and try to settle the
matter. Were.'
By now, the police had reached him before he
had succeeded.
Shoaib Khurram, senior superintendent of
police (SSPCIA) at the Criminal Investigation Agency Lahore, told the BBC that
police had arrested the accused from Lahore after a long chase.
"The accused was constantly changing his
location to avoid arrest and tried to take refuge in different cities but was
unsuccessful." Earlier, police said that the accused along with one of his
sons was arrested from Mianwali.
SSP CIA Shoaib Khurram said that Moallem
Mufti of Manzoor-ul-Islamia Madrassa in Lahore had tried to seek refuge with
his students and relatives in different cities but he had refused to give
shelter to the accused.
He was aware that the student had the video
and his sons threatened the student and asked him not to release the video.
However, after the video surfaced on social media, he "fled the madrassa
for fear of being defamed."
The accused Mufti belongs to Lakki Marwat
area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa while the student who accused him of rape belongs
to Swat area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. According to police, the mufti told
police during the preliminary investigation that he had contacted the student's
family through a jirga and was asking them to resolve the matter through a
jirga.
However, police arrested him earlier.
The court had remanded the accused Mufti in
police custody on Monday for four days physical remand. However, how did the
police reach the accused and how could the attempt to take the matter to the
jirga affect the process of getting the accused convicted by the court?
Wallace could pinpoint his whereabouts with
the help of his and his sons' mobile phones, but he would leave before police
arrived.
"We got help not only from the location
of his phone, but also from the use of social media by his sons to find out
where he was." Shoaib Khurram said that at the same time the police were
getting help from the intelligence system.
'No one sheltered him'
According to police, the accused turned to
Lakki Marwat after Lahore. However, he feared that the police could easily
reach him because of his hometown. So he did not stay there long.
He also stayed in different areas of Mianwali
and its environs but did not stay anywhere for long. "In these areas, they
tried to take refuge with their students or their sons' friends, but no one
agreed to give them refuge."
According to SSP CIA Lahore Shoaib Khurram,
after visiting all these areas, the accused Mufti had returned to Lahore from
where he was arrested. However, if they were not getting shelter, where would
they stay in Lahore?
Could the
jirga have influenced the police investigation?
Talking to media persons in Lahore on Monday, Lahore DIG Investigation Sharq Jamal said that from the time the incident was reported till the arrest of the accused, the Prime Minister of Pakistan was in constant touch with the IG Punjab.
He said that the police was investigating the
matter on scientific grounds and every effort was being made to get the accused
convicted by the court. Importantly, there are two challenges facing the
police. If the matter goes to the jirga and a decision is made in it, the court
proceedings may be affected.
According to SSP CIA Lahore Shoaib Khurram,
the section 377 under which the case was registered against the accused was
non-invasive police ie the police could not take action against the accused on
their own if the plaintiff was acquitted. Decide to do or not to take action.
